The Chinese emperor’s reply to this letter was translated into English by Peter Parker, who was Caleb Cushing’s leading interpreter in the mission (Y. Wang, 2021, p. 186). As an achievement of this mission, the Treaty of Wanghia was signed between China and America in 1844. This treaty ensured that America was given the most favored nation status, and American citizens were permitted to trade at five ports of China and received extraterritoriality (P. Kuo, 1933, p. 36, 45).
