Our objectives were (1) to obtain and characterize the plastome of P. cordata, (2) to compare its structure and genetic composition with those of seven available Physalis plastomes, (3) to identify genes with greater variation as potential markers for genetic studies and genes that are under positive selection, and (4) to obtain a phylogenetic perspective for the genus based on the eight Physalis species for which whole plastome sequences exist.
