We introduce a new 2D/3D global modelling reservoir database called GRM-Global Reservoir Model, which integrates data from the following existing global databases: Global Reservoir and Dam database (GRanD), Reservoir Storage-Area-Depth dataset (ReGeom), WaterGAP V2.2D, FutureStreams, and ERA5 reanalysis databases. GRM generates simplified reservoir bathymetries, based on variable, user-defined segments. It further provides long-term water discharge (from 1980 to 2000), water temperature (from 1980 to 2000), and daily meteorological data (from 1980 to 2000) in model usable output files. The GRM output files can be directly implemented into popular water quality models such as CE-QUAL-W2 through GRM concurrent computing code. As such, GRM overcomes the usual gap between existing global reservoir datasets and water quality modelling research. This sets the stage for using GRM in applications looking at potential biogeochemical responses in global reservoirs and other freshwater systems due to climate change.
