The John T. Waterhouse Herbarium and its associated library is used as a source of information and material for teaching and research purposes. The collection is available for use by staff and students of UNSW, and external visitors, during working hours by arrangement. Specimens are available for loan to other institutions for study. Individual specimens may be cited by researchers in their publications as vouchers from which original data have been obtained. Data categories include morphological, molecular, chemical, histological, ecological, palynological, biogeographical and historical. The herbarium was named after John T. Waterhouse, a senior lecturer in Botany in the School who was instrumental in obtaining the international registration of the herbarium in Index Herbariorum in 1981. He had a longstanding interest in rainforests and the family Myrtaceae. In October 2017, the collection moved to a new, modern, purpose-built facility within the new Biosciences South Building, with a separated, climate-controlled collection vault.
