Collection methodology (from Novakova et al., submitted):
The data was collected at the Faculty of Science, Charles University in Prague, in early summer 2018 and 2019. The experiments were conducted in accordance with the Declaration of Helsinki and approved by the faculty IRB (approval no. 2018/10). Participants were invited via online recruitment, with a maximum of 18 participants invited for each session. In total, 158 people participated (74 men with a mean age of 29 years, a median age of 29 years, and ages ranging from 18 to 53; 84 women with a mean age of 31 years, a median age of 28 years, and ages ranging from 18 to 58). On the site, the participants were greeted at the reception and led to the computer lab, where they first read and signed their informed consent and guidelines for the experiment. For a different study looking at testosterone and cortisol levels (Novakova et al., 2024), their saliva was collected into salivettes. After that, they took part in a survey including both experimental games, the Meili Test of short-term memory, a four-question Cognitive Reflection Test (CRT), Cattell’s 12-item (A version) intelligence test, self-reported health (physical and mental condition as perceived relative to peers) and a temporal discounting task. Another section of the survey focused on participants’ views of attractiveness and their number of romantic and sexual relationships, collected for another study (Novakova et al. 2021), which describes the details of that section.
The DG and UG were each played for 400 tokens translatable into 40 CZK (roughly 2 USD), which constituted the participants’ reward. They were first presented with the rules and truthfully told that they would be randomly matched with another person in the room and that their earnings at the end of the experiment would reflect the outcome of both games. Each participant was asked how much they want to give (DG) and offer (UG) the other player, and what is their minimum acceptable offer (MAO) in the UG from their co-player. Before the participants played the games, they answered control questions to assess whether they understood the rules of the games correctly and a question about any previous knowledge of either of the games (from lectures, literature, and so on).
Finally, several indices were calculated before the analysis: A memory score was computed from the number of successfully remembered Meili test images. The number of correct answers in the CRT test amounted to one overall CRT score. An intelligence score was computed from the number of correct choices in Cattell’s intelligence test. And, last but not least, two measures ofk(the discount rate) were computed from the participants’ preferences in two questions on temporal discounting: the first one assessing the indifference point in case of a one-month delay, the second one in case of a one-year delay. The value (V) was fixed at 10,000 CZK (approx. 410 USD), the delay (D) at one, resp. 12 months, and the amount (A) to be hypotheticaly received after the delay varied between 10,000 and 30,000 CZK. The following discounting function was used to calculate the discount rate for all participants with consistent preferences (participants with inconsistent preferences, e.g. preferring the immediate reward of 10,000 CZK instead of a delayed reward of 20,000 CZK, but preferring a delayed reward of 11,000 CZK, were omitted from the discounting analysis) for each of the questions:
k= (A/V-1)/D
