Soil Water, plant xylem water, and leaf wax hydrogen isotope survey from Toolik Lake Area 2013-2014

This dataset accompanies a manuscript published in Geochimica et Cosmochimica Acta (http://dx.doi.org/10.1016/j.gca.2017.06.028). The leaf wax (n-alkane and n-acid) hydrogen isotopes are a common proxy for paleoclimate reconstructions from lake sediment cores. Yet, the interpretation of leaf wax hydrogen-2/hydrogen-1 (2H/1H) records hinges on our understanding of the modern systematics of water isotope fractionation and source water seasonality within ecosystems and among different plant species. This dataset contains hydrogen (and oxygen) isotope data from Arctic Alaska, measured in precipitation, soil water, as well as plant xylem and leaf water from two common tundra species, Betula nana and Eriophorum vaginatum. In addition to the water isotope measurements, this data package contains leaf wax distributions and 2H/1H values for the same two species, as well as in surface sediment samples from a suite of lakes and in sediment trap samples collected from the Arctic Long Term Ecological Research (ARC LTER) study lake, Lake E5.
