Online purchases surged during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic in China. According to a survey on Chinese online shopping behavior conducted by Rakuten Insight in May 2020, about 61 percent of the respondents aged between 25 and 34 years said that they had shopped more online during the pandemic. The most commonly purchased items were food and groceries and personal hygiene products such as toilet paper and masks.
