VPRS 2335 Microfilm copy of rate books

This series is a microfilm copy of VPRS 8816. The reference copy of this series is available in the Public Record Office's Laverton Search Room.In 1976 funding was provided through the National Estate Project which enabled a number Victorian municipalities to have their pre 1900 rate books microfilmed. Depending upon finance available within the municipality and to the Public Record office, the master set of microfilm and a reference copy of the microfilm, were transferred into archival custody as VPRS 2335/P consignment.The rate books in this series contain a complete record of particulars of all the rateable properties within the wards constituting the municipality of St. Kilda.The revenue of a municipality is in part derived from the levying of rates on rateable properties within a municipal district. Every rate is required to be entered in a Rate Book which records the levying and payment of rates on rateable properties. General Rates are levied equally on all rateable properties within the municipality and form a part of the municipal fund used for expenses incurred in carrying out the provisions of the Local Government Act.
