We have found several allelic variants of the RAET1e gene in humans. RAET1e is also referred to as ULBP4 and functions as a ligand for the NK cell activating receptor, NKG2D. The reason for the polymorphism is unknown but may influence to signalling via NKG2D to the NK cells and vary the response cytolytic response of NK cells that encounter this ligand. This ligand is expressed on cell that are stressed by either tumorigenic transformation or viral infection.
