很久很久以前，有一位技艺精湛的老裁缝。他自视甚高，自诩为天下第一的制衣高手。这位老裁缝育有一貌美如花的女儿，常宣称"此国之内，无人能及我裁缝技艺"，愈发骄矜自负。

一日，村中众人皆倾慕这位姑娘，然其心意并非欲与她相守一生，仅因贪恋其绝世美貌而已。姑娘的美名很快传遍村外，邻村一位同样手艺出众的年轻裁缝听闻此事，暗自思忖："无论如何，我都想见一见这位技艺超群的老裁缝，更想一睹他的女儿。该当如何是好？"年轻裁缝苦思冥想，终得一计。

他四处寻觅名贵华美的布料，却在本村一无所获。于是辗转各地，历经月余，终遇一位售卖成衣的老者，购得一方极其精美的布料，并用其缝制了三件衬衫。

完成衬衫后，年轻裁缝自语道："甚好，正如我所计划的，我这便前去拜访那位技艺精湛的老裁缝与他的爱女。"说罢便启程前往老裁缝所在的村落。彼时正值酷暑，老裁缝无法伏案制衣，正坐在椅上纳凉，令女儿手持团扇为他扇风。

年轻裁缝来到老裁缝家门前，高声叫卖："精美衬衫在此！精美衬衫在此！"他接连叫卖之际，老裁缝怒道："这般酷热，又被吵扰，快停下叫卖！"年轻裁缝喊了三四声后，老裁缝对女儿说道："去看看是谁在门外喧哗，竟在天下第一裁缝的门前叫卖什么精美衬衫，速速去看。"

女儿前去查看，对年轻裁缝说道："让我看看你的衬衫，究竟有多精美？"姑娘接过衬衫端详，只见其做工华美绝伦，便将衬衫带回给父亲。老裁缝一见，亦大为心动，说道："去把这位先生请进来。"

年轻裁缝进门后，老裁缝对他说道："我本以为自己的制衣技艺堪称天下无双，然观你的手艺似在我之上。你愿来我这里做工吗？"年轻裁缝暗自思量，若能在此做工，便能每日见到这位貌美姑娘，便应道："我愿为您效力。"老裁缝说道："好，明日便开始吧。"

年轻裁缝自此留在老裁缝家中做工。老裁缝对这位年轻人颇为赏识，有意招他为婿，便让他与女儿同桌用餐、一同劳作，以期二人互生情愫。

约莫半年后，国王听闻了老裁缝之女的美名，遂下令亲信调查："听闻有一位技艺高超的老裁缝，其女貌美绝伦，去查查这位姑娘是否已有婚约。"国王的亲信调查后回报："姑娘尚无男友。"国王便亲自前往老裁缝家，求娶其女。迫于国王的威势，老裁缝与女儿不敢违抗，姑娘只得随国王入宫。

国王筹备婚礼之际，下诏道："可有能为王后缝制绝美礼服之人？朕将重重赏赐。"年轻裁缝听闻此事，说道："我愿为王后缝制礼服。"说罢便取来布料，暗自道："若是为我心爱之人缝制衣裳，定要做出世间最美的礼服。"他走进制衣间，望着布料不禁潸然泪下，随后闭门不出，直至礼服完工。门外众人见他闭门不出，以为他因思念而哀伤，便未贸然敲门，只听得屋内传来断断续续的缝纫声。直至距原定工期尚有两日之时，缝纫声戛然而止。众人以为礼服已然完工，遂推门而入，却见年轻裁缝已然离世，他终是完成了那件绝美礼服。

老裁缝取来那件礼服，将此事告知国王与公主。国王闻讯后悔恨不已，说道："朕虽为万民之主，却毁了这对有情人的姻缘，朕心有愧。"说罢，国王将王位传给公主，自己遁入山林修行，散尽了所有家财。
