Source of Energy and pre-explosion progenitor evolution of Super-luminous SNe

We propose an indepth study of 1 SuperLuminous Supernova (SLSN). SLSN are >10times more luminous than ordinary SN and represent the deaths of the mostmassive stars in our Universe. Their extreme luminosity requires exoticexplosion mechanisms and sources of energy whose nature is unclear. Here wepropose a focused XMM program to map their Xray emission down to unprecedentedlimits as part of our multiwavelength effort (UV, optical/NIR, radio, hardXrays). The final goal is to\\: (i) Constrain the energy source of SLSN; (ii)Map the diversity of the preexplosion evolution of their progenitors. (iii)Constrain their possible association with GammaRay Bursts.
