Wiltshire and Swindon Historic Landscape Characterisation (HLC)

Project as part of the national 'Historic Landscape Characterisation' Initiative, sponsored by Historic England and carried out by Wiltshire Council Archaeology Service. Characterisation data created for the entirety of Wiltshire Unitary area and Swindon Borough Council using modern maps and aerial photographs, historic maps and other historic environment datasets. This desktop study provides information on the present and past character of the county's landscape and quantifies attributes and characteristics that allow an understanding of the evolution of Wiltshire's landscape to be gained. The project's products comprise a full text report (available as digital or hardcopy), a database of c.14500 records and an associated set of ArcGIS shapefiles. This project incorporates HLC data from the Cranborne Chase and West Wiltshire Downs AONB HLC project and the North Wessex Downs AONB HLC project but re-classified data from the Cotswolds AONB HLC project.
