Jurisdiction: Structural, life, and fire safety of buildings and structures in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Applicability: New construction, renovation, or demolition of existing structures, and changes of use or occupancy of an existing building must conform to the provisions of the Massachusetts State Building Code. Regulatory The purpose of the State Building Code is to protect public safety by ensuring that buildings that are intended for occupancy are structurally sound, are constructed of appropriate materials, have adequate egress for fire safety, promote energy conservation, and have adequate sanitary facilities. The building code is written by the State Board of Regulations and Standards, and is administered locally by board-certified building inspectors. Review Process: Application for a building permit is made to the local building inspector. The application is, to some extent, locally determined, but certain minimum information, such as a site description, contractor information, a description of the proposed work, and a cost estimate must be included.
