ThisStateoftheWorld’sChildrenreportintroducesyoutosomeoftheextraordinarywomen,whodespitethechallengestheyoftenface,aregoingaboveandbeyondtomakesurechildrenintheircommunitieshaveaccesstovaccines.It’simperativethathealthworkersliketheseareempoweredandsupported.Vaccinateeverychildthrougheffectiveimmunizationprogrammesandcatch-upcampaignsCatch-uponthevaccinationofchildrenmissedduringthepandemic.67millionchildrenmissedoutentirelyorpartiallyonroutineimmunizationduringthepandemic.Thesechildrenaremovingpasttheagewhentheywouldnormallybevaccinated.Urgentactionandtailoredimmunizationcampaignsareneededtoreachthem,backedbysufficientfinancialsupportforthecountriesmostaffected.Thesecatch-upcampaignsarenecessaryinadditiontostrengtheningexistingroutineimmunizationprogrammesthatareembeddedinprimaryhealthcare.Identifyzero-doseandunder-vaccinatedchildrenandunderstandtheirneeds.Bygatheringhigh-qualityimmunizationdata,wecanidentifyandlocatezero-dosechildrenandcommunitiesthathavebeenmissed.Akeycomponentofthisworkisengagingwiththesecommunitiesandtheirleaderstohelpidentifybarrierstochildrenbeingvaccinated,andtodevelopapproachesthatmeettheneedsofthesefamilies.Identifychildreninurbanareasandaccesschildreninruralareaswhoaren’tbeingreached.Thiswillinvolvestrengtheningcommunityengagement,recoveringhumanresourceslostduetotheneedtorespondtothepandemic,offeringflexiblevaccineservicesandempoweringlocalhealthworkers.Meetthechallengesinemergencyandconflictsettings.It’simportantthatweprioritizerestoringhealthworkforcesandinfrastructureinthesefragilesettingssochildrenonthemovehaveaccesstovaccines.Theworldisfacingaredalertforchildren’shealth:RoutinevaccinationcoveragedroppedsharplyduringtheCOVID-19pandemic.UNICEF’slatestreport,TheStateoftheWorld’sChildren2023:Foreverychild,vaccination,exploresthereasonsbehindthisredalertandthestepsweasaglobalcommunitymusttaketomakesurethatnochildisleftbehind.Author(s)UNICEFPublicationdateApril2023LanguagesEnglish,French,Arabic,Spanish
