In the last year there have been two separate outbreaks of bacterial infection on the neonatal unit of the hospital on the MRC Gambia campus; one due to Klebsiella pneumoniae and another due to Burkholderia cepacia. From the K. pneumoniae outbreak we have 27 isolates collected from cases of disease. From the B. cepacia outbreak we have 55 isolates from cases of disease. We plan to sequence the whole genomes of these isolates to investigate the outbreak. The main purpose of the investigation will be to identify transmission events to understand how the outbreak developed and to identify potential sources of the infectious agent. The analysis will be set in the context of broader public genome datasets to help identify such sources. 1) This data is part of a pre-publication release.
