This study reconstructs the historical water level changes of Poyang Lake using geochemical methods. First, a reliable chronological framework for Poyang Lake sediments was established based on high-resolution 210Pb and 14C dating. On this basis, a continuous history of water level fluctuations in Poyang Lake was quantitatively reconstructed using the emerging microbial biomarker GDGTs-based water depth proxy. The results show that the southern basin of Poyang Lake began to form approximately 2000 years ago; influenced by multiple factors including climate change, tectonic activity, and interactions with the Yangtze River, the water level of Poyang Lake has exhibited an upward trend over the past 2000 years, with the threat of regional flood disasters continuing to intensify. Further integrating the historical changes of ancient towns in the Poyang Lake region, the research team found that since the Song Dynasty, the elevations of ancient human residential areas no longer increased alongside the rising lake water levels, indicating that ancient Chinese society had developed social resilience to address flood threats as early as 1000 years ago, which may be linked to the advancements in science and technology and the unprecedented economic prosperity of the Song Dynasty in China. Additionally, the patterns of Poyang Lake's water level fluctuations and their influencing factors revealed by this study also provide reference values for regional water conservancy project construction. The dataset collects biomarker proxy data and reconstruction records related to water level changes in Poyang Lake over the past 2000 years, totaling 49 sampling point data entries.
