SARS-CoV-2 and Pyroptosis

Studies that focus on understanding and describing the pathogenic mechanisms that trigger the most serious and lethal manifestations of COVID-19 are necessary. Here, we show that SARS-CoV-2 triggers pyroptosis in human primary monocytes, either by experimental or natural infection. We further demonstrate that SARS-CoV-2-induced pyroptosis is dependent on inflammasome engagement, as judged by enhanced levels of caspase-1 and IL-1β activation. Monocytes that survive upon infection have reduced ability to express HLA-DR, likely impairing the antigen presentation.
