Application of the Federal Character Principle and Improved Integration in the Federal Civil Service of Nigeria: A Study Of Selected Federal Ministries In Anambra State

The study examined the application of the Federal Character Principle and improved integration in theFederal Civil Service of Nigeria. Integration is essentially nation-building programs in whichdysfunctional or unstable or "failed states" or economies are given assistance in the development ofgovernmental infrastructure, civil society, dispute resolution mechanisms, as well as economic assistance,in order to increase stability. The study relied heavily on primary and secondary data, and a surveyresearch method was used to examine the application of the Federal Character principle and improveintegration. Two research questions and hypotheses guided the study. Findings of the study showed thatthe Federal character principle impacts on national integration and has not improved the Federal civilservice integration in Nigeria. To achieve improved integration, the principle of federal character shouldbe applied with less stringency but with fairness among states and local governments that arehomogenous, to avoid creating division where none may have existed.
