Enhancing diverse ecosystem services: Nature-based measures outperform technical interventions in river management - Data repository

The following data repository compiles systematically extracted data from a comprehensive literature review assessing the impacts of technical and nature-based river management measures on ecosystem services. Using a structured approach following PRISMA guidelines, this repository synthesizes findings from 9 review studies. The dataset provides an overview of the relationships between diverse river management measures and their effects on provisioning, regulating, and cultural ecosystem services in riverine landscapes.<br>Nature-based river management measures, such as floodplain restoration, dyke relocation, and habitat improvements, show significantly greater multifunctionality, positively influencing multiple ecosystem services. In contrast, technical measures, including dam construction, channelization, and intensive infrastructure expansion, tend to provide limited benefits while frequently causing trade-offs that compromise ecological integrity. The repository categorizes these findings by defining the river management measure and evaluating the potential impact on ecosystem services.By offering an evidence-based synthesis, this dataset supports policymakers, practitioners, and researchers in identifying sustainable river management strategies that maximize ecosystem benefits.
