Water and sediments of an acidic hot spring 4229, the Uzon Caldera, Kamchatka

Microbial communities of water and sediments (separately) of acidic hot spring #4229 (the Uzon Caldera, Kamchatka) were studied using amplification and sequencing of 16S rRNA gene fragments. It was revealed that the microbial community of hot water is represented by thermoacidophilic, (micro)aerobic, chemolitoautotrophic, hydrogen- and sulfur-oxidizing bacteria. Sediment microbiome consisted almost only of archaea, mostly uncultured deep-branching lineages. Our study revealed significant differences in the composition and functions of the microbial communities of water and sediments on the example of a typical acidic hot spring in Kamchatka.
