Datura discolor Genome sequencing

The genus Datura has the potential to be a model clade for the study of secondary metabolism and plant-insect interactions. We previously published a genome assembly for the sacred Datura plant (Datura wrightii), a perennial species that is exceptionally tolerant to herbivory. To continue developing this system, we have now produced a chormosome-scale genome for the desert thorn apple (Datura discolor) - a close relative of D. wrightii that exhibits key life history and interaction differences. Datura discolor is an annual species, it is intolerant to herbivory, and it is less likely to interact with herbivorous insects than D. wrightii. We used this genome in a series of gene family and synteny analyses to understand the genetic basis of its interactions with herbivorous insects and its striking divergence from D. wrightii.
