We performed RNA-Seq with cDNA transcripts from egg, female and male S. mansoni using 454/Roche technology and reconstructed the transcriptome with Trinity de novo assembly. Transcripts with no match to predicted genes were analyzed for their protein-coding potential and presence of an encoded conserved protein domain. We detected a set of 256 novel protein-coding genes with functions related to reproduction, metabolism and cell biogenesis, which add important knowledge about the parasite biology.
