Method: On September 23, 2014, our Ecology lab group, led by our teacher assistant Taylor Noble, split up into 3 groups. After walking to the grassland and woodlot area of York University – Keele Campus, each group was responsible for collecting 4 datasets. The grassland and woodlots were still in fairly good condition, given the time of year, and there were many plants and trees to study. Our group members were Jason, Coleen, Leeron, Zainab and Sanaz. The following dataset is for the third dataset collected. In this dataset, a transect was placed on the ground through the woodlot beginning at a random adult tree observed. Adult trees were identified if the height of the tree was approximately twice Sanaz’s height of approximately 160cm. For each adult tree, the distance between the trees and the diameter breast height (dbh) of the trunk were measured in centimeters using a second transect measuring tape. These measurements were taken by the same person and recorded. The condition of each adult tree was also ranked from 0 – 2 by group members, and recorded. If the condition of the tree was dead, it was ranked 0, if it was living, it was ranked 1, and if it had a huge green canopy, it was ranked 2. In total 10 adult trees were observed and the above-mentioned measurements were recorded for each.
