At the time, the then Japanese Environment Agency produced distribution maps based on distribution records of 126 mammal species submitted by national experts, covering all mammal species documented in Japan, during the 4th Basic Survey on Wildlife Distribution, which spanned fiscal years 1990 (Heisei 2) to 1992 (Heisei 4). This dataset is a converted GIS dataset derived from mesh-format CSV data (published on the Natural Environment Survey Web-GIS), originally created based on the "Mammal Distribution Map 0094: Brown Bear" and "Mammal Distribution Map 0095: Asiatic Black Bear" publications issued by the Environment Agency in 1993.
