VPRS 19114 Minutes and Papers, Human Research Ethics Committee (previously Scientific Committee, Board of Medical Research, and Clinical Research and Ethics Committee )

This series comprises the minutes and papers of the Human Research Ethics Committee of the Royal Melbourne Hospital (VA 1048). This committee was known as the Scientific Committee or Board of Medical Research between 1974 and 1995. Between 1995 and July 2002 this committee was known as the Clinical Research and Ethics Committee. The Board of Medical Research was established to co-ordinate and oversee all medical research at the Royal Melbourne Hospital. The Board was responsible for approving clinical research projects or any research project involving human beings or animals. Additional responsibilities included: disseminating information on research projects; assessing the professional and scientific value of submitted research projects, both in absolute terms and in costs in time and money; and ensuring the requirements of the Federal Department of Health were met in the use of any imported therapeutic agents. Prior to transfer to Public Record Office Victoria, the records in this series were maintained as part of the Royal Melbourne Hospital Archives.
