Information on biological material from 224 Wistar rats
held at

Responsible scientists: Eduard Lubchansky, Olga Kuzmenko, Valentina Revina
Background
The information was gathered from 224 Wistar rats that were used in SUBIs experiment no. 76323. The collection and collation of the information was done as part of Task 4.8 of the previous EURATOM-funded project DoReMi (Integrating Low Dose Research) [European Atomic Energy Community's Seventh Framework Programme (FP7/2007-2011) under grant agreement n° 249689, coordinated by STUK, Finland; see http://melodi-online.eu/DoReMi/home.html ].
The work was a follow-up of a previous work conducted by SUBI in the frame of EURATOM-funded project STORE (Sustaining access to Tissues and data frOm Radiobiological Experiments; contract number 23228), which was coordinated by BfS, Germany.
The information given here is based upon the final report from SUBI, which can be found in the STORE database.
It has been shown in the STORE project, that the biological material from the experiments conducted by SUBI can still be used. The respective Standard Operating Procedures are available on the STORE website (http://www.storedb.org/store_v3/documents.jsp ).
The SUBI experiment 76323
The study was aimed at investigating late effects in Wistar rats after prolonged (6 months) intake of tritium oxide in a wide range of absorbed doses. It was conducted in the period from 1973 till 1978. The male animals were intragastrically administered with 3.7 (series 1); 37 (series 2) and 370 (series 6) kBq/g/day of tritium oxide on a daily basis during 6 months. Two series of intact rats (93♂) were used as controls for experimental groups (series 4 control for series 1 and 2; series 7 control for series 6). The processing of organs and tissues of the animals which died natural death included: fixation in formalin; washing; dehydration in spirits and holding in castor oil with celloidin; paraffin embedding; preparation of blocks; preparation of cuts for microscopy. The procedure is presented in detail in the file SUBI_Paraffin_Block_Preparation.pdf.
Information on individual animals
The information on the individual animals is very detailed and given in Russian. It is currently available only for the control groups (Series 4 and 7), the information for the others will follow.
Available biomaterial
Paraffin-fixed samples of organs and tissues are available for 224 rats of all 5 series. They include: lungs (1080 samples); heart (221); stomach (217); small (737) and large (396) intestine; pancreas (193); liver (247); kidneys (434); bladder (71); bone marrow (229); lymph nodes, mostly mesentery (335); spleen (217); hypophysis (210); adrenals (431); thyroid (383) and parathyroid (358) glands; testicles (401); decalcified bones of different part of the skeleton (1883), as well as 49 samples of tumor diseases.
An overview on the number of organs per study group is available in.
