Unit Emergy Values (UEVs) for Energy, Materials, Products, and Environmental Flows

This dataset provides a comprehensive collection of Unit Emergy Values (UEVs) for energy carriers, materials, minerals, metals, and environmental flows used in emergy accounting and energy systems analysis. The dataset supports the calculations, examples, and case studies presented in Emergy: The Coupling of Human and Natural Systems. The UEVs compiled here represent extracted, refined, converted, and delivered forms of energy and materials, extending upstream emergy characterizations through technological and industrial processes required for human use. A primary upstream foundation for many entries is provided by a companion dataset derived from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s EMCF Database for Life Cycle Assessment, recalculated using a Biosphere Dynamic Empower (BDE) baseline of 40.0 × 10²⁴ sej yr⁻¹. Together, the two datasets provide a continuous emergy accounting framework from global and geologic resource formation to delivered energy and materials.
