City Futures: Trends, Claims, and Complications

In this report we identify and demonstrate: a set of 5 trendswhich describe the forces that are shaping city futures; and14 claims that describe how cities are likely to respond tothose trends. Together these trends and claims constitutedominant visions for future Australian cities, and arederived from a review of 64 industry reports, policy,planning, and strategy documents. Alongside these trendsand claims we have also identified a set of complications,drawn from existing social science research that highlighthow everyday life experiences, actions and processesmight disrupt these trends and claims. The insightsdelivered in this report forms part of a wider programme ofresearch led by Monash University?s FUTURES Hub whichwill build on and investigate these complications to delivernew knowledge about future everyday life in cities, and itsrole in Australia?s digital and net zero transition, includingplausible visions of future Australian cities.
