It can be used to evaluate general animal re-identification methods that leverage the fur, feather, and skin patterns of animals. The inherent challenges of this task stem from multiple factors: significant lighting variations, drastic changes in seal poses, limited size of recognizable regions, low contrast between the ringed patterns and the rest of the seal's body, notable differences between wet and dry fur, as well as the low image quality of automatic camera traps. This dataset is specifically designed for the re-identification task of Saimaa ringed seals.
