Place Names from Chapter 7, "The Slave Road" in Peter Frankopan's "The Silk Roads." This chapter's place names extend farther in Europe than in previous parts of the book. This came with the introduction of the Viking Rus and an increased interest in the slave trade and how fast it could generate profit. This chapter details the earliest locations of slave markets in both Europe and Central Asia, and how these markets laid the foundation and built up economies in those areas. Through this, the sheer number of empires and powerful cities rose, as well as the Catholic Church alongside it. However, exploits in the East would soon take its toll on the Christian Byzantine Empire.
