The effect of a broad range of sub-inhibitory ciprofloxacin concentrations on antibiotic resistance development in Escherichia coli was tested. The emergence of low-level resistance to both ciprofloxacin and other classes of antibiotics, that is both time and concentration dependent was observed. Whole genome sequencing identified a spectrum of single mutations in resistant strains, both previously described and novel.
