Annotation of Metadiscourse Markers in Collected Samples

This dataset contains the researcher's annotation of seventy pieces of argumentative essays collected from undergraduates in a renowned university located in southern China. The current study aims to investigate the relationship between the use of metadiscourse markers and the construction of pragmatic identity in the argumentative writing of Chinese undergraduate students through empirical research. Firstly, utalizing the interpersonal model of metadiscourse, this study identified 612 instances of metadiscourse. Among these, 254 were classified as interactive metadiscourse, and 358 as interactional metadiscourse, highlighting the interpersonal significance inherent in argumentative writing. Secondly, through an exploration of metadiscourse distribution and pragmatic identity construction in Chinese undergraduates’ argumentative essays, this study demonstrates a close correlation between the use of metadiscourse and pragmatic competence.本数据集包含研究者对70篇本科生议论文习作的标注，这些习作采集自中国南方一所知名高校。本研究旨在通过实证探究，剖析中国本科生议论文写作中元话语标记语（metadiscourse markers）的使用与语用身份建构之间的内在关联。首先，本研究依托元话语人际分析模型，共识别出612处元话语实例，其中254处归类为互动式元话语，358处归类为交互性元话语，凸显了议论文写作所蕴含的人际意义。其次，通过分析中国本科生议论文中的元话语分布特征与语用身份建构情况，本研究证实元话语的使用与语用能力之间存在紧密关联。
