Arctic permafrost harbors unique but still poorly described microbial communities. Several recent studies Actinobacteria were found to be highly dominant (approx. 50% of total bacteria) in cryoturbated organic matter in permafrost affected soil of Siberian Arctic. Members of this phylum and especially species from Arthrobacter genus are probably one of the best taxa adapted to the harsh conditions occurring in permafrost soils because of their metabolic activity at low temperatures. They contain important DNA-repair mechanisms and are able to produce extracellular enzymes to degrade biopolymers such as cellulose or lignin.
