Changes of intestinal microbiota and barrier function are associated with aging

The duodenum plays an important role during digestion. The microbiota from this niche was linked with conditions like celiac disease and obesity. The gut microbial communities are linked to the genetic material from the host change during the aging process. The microbial composition from the duodenum was analyzed targeting the V1-V2 region of 16s rRNA. Our results showed changes in the duodenal microbiota related to aging. At the genus level, Allobacullum, Bifidobacteria, Olsenella and Corynebacterium shifted statistically related to the age. We identified several species of Lactobacillus in the duodenum, however, we did not see statistical differences related to the aging process.
