Параллели между славянскими и германскими языками: индоевропейское наследие и типологическое сходство [Slavic-Germanic Parallels: Indo-European Heritage and Typological Similarity]

This coauthored book chapter was published in 2002 as part of the monograph on Slavic languages and cultures in a non-Slavic environment edited by Prof. Tatiana M. Nikolaeva. We leave aside cultures and cultural traditions in our chapter but discuss three groups of language phenomena: 1) Slavic-Germanic lexical isoglosses, see section 1. written by Svetlana Burlak; 2) issues in Slavic and Germanic dialectology, phonetics, prosody and accentology, see section 2. written by Andrei Melnikov except for paragraph 2.4. written jointly by Andrei Melnikov and Anton Zimmerling; 3) issues in historical Slavic and Germanic syntax including the diagnostics of inherited sentence patterns, grammatical borrowings and convergent trends, see section 3. written by Anton Zimmerling. We discuss the question whether some shared features of Slavic and Germanic languages should be explained by the Indo-European heritage, i. e. the preservation of large fragments of late Indo-European lexicon, sound structure and grammatical structure, or by convergent trends and language contacts dating back to the epoch, when Slavic and Germanic people were neighbors. In general, the observed and reconstructed Slavic - Germanic parallels do not confirm the hypothesis about the existence of the *Slavo-Germanic protolanguage, contra Martynov (1963) and Stang (1972).
