Le denominazioni del fico nei dialetti salentini

This study examines the linguistic diversity of fig tree nomenclature in Salentinian dialects, focusing on the lexical variety associated with Ficus carica domestica L. Through a combination of bibliographic research and oral surveys conducted in various locations in the province of Lecce, this investigation has compiled a lexicon of fig names, revealing significant phonetic, morphological, and geographical variations. The study highlights the historical and cultural significance of fig cultivation in Salento, once a cornerstone of the local economy and rural life. Findings indicate that despite the decline in fig production since the mid-20th century, dialectal lexicons continue to preserve a rich and varied terminology. This research contributes to the broader field of linguistic and ethnobotanical studies, shedding light on the intricate relationship between language, agricultural practices, and regional identity.
