The healing process of diabetic ulcers correlates with changes in the cutaneous microbiota

Skin microbiota plays an essential role in protecting the skin from pathogenic microorganisms, in educating skin immune responses, and in the metabolism of some natural products. With the goal to characterize changes in the skin microbiome associated with the wound healing process in a diabetic condition, we performed a 16S rRNA gene Next Generation Sequencing of skin swabs taken within the ulcer bed and in the perilesional tissue of ten diabetic patients before and after 20-days therapy with a fluorescein-based galenic treatment.
