I propose to conduct archaeological reconnaissance along the southwest coast of Santa Cruz Island, visiting recorded sites, searching for unrecorded sites, and collecting radiocarbon (14C) samples from eroding site exposures to help expand and fill in the chronology of human occupation and ecological change between the Canada Cervada and Punta Arena areas. I am working collaboratively and in consultation with UCSB faculty (M. Glassow, L. Gamble) and graduate students (A. Gusick and K. Gill) who are also working in the western Santa Cruz area. Specific goals of the project include: (1) searching for Paleocoastal sites (>9000 years old), (2) filling in the gaps in the chronology of the area; and (3) identifying a relatively high-resolution and trans-Holocene (or longer) sequence of human occupation that will help better understand changes in human adaptations and the historical ecology of the southwestern Santa Cruz area.
