Pear (Pyrus spp.) is one of the leading cultivated fruit trees of temperate regions, and grown widely in all the continents of the world. Here we present a high-quality draft genome sequence assembly of Pyrus bretschneideri Rehd. Var. Dangshansuli, sequenced with 7.6X coverage, and demonstrate that a highly heterozygous plant genome can be assembled using a novel combination of BAC-by-BAC strategy and next generation sequencing without physical reference.
