TheGreenlandIceSheet(GrIS)islosingmassinanacceleratedfashion,whichisfor˜60% dominatedbyanincreaseinsurfacemelting.CloudsexhibitanimportantcontrolontheGrISsurface energybalanceandsurfacemelt.Therefore,tobettersimulatepresentandfutureGrISclimate,itisessentialtorepresentcloudscorrectlyinclimatemodels.Hereweuseground(atSummitStation)and satelliteremotesensing(fromCloudSat-CALIPSO)observ ationstoevaluateGrIScloudcharacteristicsin severalversionsoftheCommunityAtmosphereModel(CAM)overtheperiod2007–2012.Cloudcover,phase,waterpath,andradiativeeffectsovertheGrISvarywidelyacrosstheatmospheremodels.Thanksto theinclusionofnewcloudphysicalparameterizations,thatis,icenucleationandprognosticprecipitation, inthemostrecentCAMversion(CAM6),thismodel,amongstthevariousCAMversions,isbestableto
