In the pursuit of novel nitrogen-based compounds with prospects as technological materials, whether as high energy density materials, superhard materials, or others, as well as for building empirical knowledge on chemical rules in simple binary systems, nitrogen’s behaviour has been investigated at high pressures with most elements in the periodic table. There is a single exception to this: halides. In an effort to begin closing out the final chapter on high-pressure nitrogen-based binary compounds. This proposal will focus on investigating the I-N and Br-N systems in laser-heated diamond anvil cell up to pressures of 130 GPa. Novel compounds are expected to be found, potentially a high energy density IN6 compound with hypervalent iodine, and their structures solved and refined with single-crystal X-ray diffraction.
