VPRS 7586 Register of Letters Patent

This series consists of original Letters Patent conferred by the Crown on various individuals. A Letter Patent is an open letter from the British Sovereign conferring a particular right of title. These should not be confused with patents granted by the Crown for lands, commercial inventions, etc. Letters Patent are required for individuals appointed to such positions as Governor, Deputy Governor, Queen's Counsel, Executive Councillor, Minister, Supreme or County Court judge and Royal Commissioner. The Patent itself takes the form of a single page printed document addressed to the recipient setting out the particular commission. It is signed by the Governor and a Government representative, usually the Premier, Attorney-General or Chief Secretary.
