LL_DEEP

The LifeLines-DEEP cohort is a sub-cohort of the LifeLines population-based prospective cohort (167,729 participants) that employs a broad range of investigative procedures to assess the biomedical, socio-demographic, behavioral, physical and psychological factors that contribute to health and disease in the general Dutch population (Scholtens 2015). A subset of approximately 1,500 participants aged 18 years and older took part in LifeLines-DEEP. For these participants, additional biological materials were collected. We collected additional blood (n = 1387), exhaled air (n = 1425) and faecal samples (n = 1248), and elicited responses to gastrointestinal health questionnaires (n = 1176) for analysis of the genome, epigenome, transcriptome, microbiome, metabolome and other biological levels. Lifelines DEEP can be used to examine the determinants of gastrointestinal health by using collected questionnaire data on food intake and quality of life assessments and by using detailed data on genetic, genomic and metabolic variation for a wide range of phenotypic outcomes. This multi-level data also allows for translational research on disease biomarkers, disease mechanisms and prevention.
