The genetic and metabolic diversity of the archaeal assemblage in a highly saline microbial mat of a Mediterranean multi-pond solar saltern. The sampling site is located in a crystallizer pond from which the salt is periodically harvested. Between 5 cm to 10 cm of the soft sediment were sampled in June 2009, prior to the salt harvesting.
