Marssonina zanthoxyli is a destructive pathogen causing leaf defoliation in Zanthoxylum bungeanum, an important ecological and economic forest. At present, there is no clear molecular identification of the pathogen. And genomic sequencing can be applied in plant pathology to identify pathogens, unveil their evolutionary links, estimates their divergence times for groups originating from a shared forebear. In addition, the lack of a high-quality genome for M. zanthoxyli has hindered research on its interaction with Z. bungeanum and the development of precise control strategies for leaf defoliation.
