Chlamydia psittaci in fulmars from the Faroe Islands were analyzed by whole genome sequencing. Retrospective analysis suggests that naïve fulmars acquired C. psittaci from dead parrots thrown over board when shipping to Europe in the 1930s and explains the severe psittacosis outbreak on the Faroe Islands reported in 1938.
