The influence of newcaslte disease virus on chicken gut microbiota

By using chickens, we show that host microbiota is altered when infected with different virulent Newcastle disease virus. We demonstrate Escherichia-Shigella was significantly increased in both velogenic and lentogenic NDV infected groups, but the lactobacillus was only remarkably decreased in velogenic NDV infected group. Collectively, NDV infection in chickens resulted in a shift of the gut microbiota, including a loss of probiotic bacteria with a compensatory expansion of pathogenic bacteria. These results provide new insights into the potential pathogenic mechanisms of NDV.
