Phase 1: Pivoting Mass Ply Panel (MPP) Wall and Buckling-Restrained Boundary (BRB) Elements

This project tests innovative lateral force resisting systems (LFRSs) comprised of newer mass timber products and steel energy dissipation mechanisms. These LFRSs represent a suite of resilient design techniques that can localize damage in special hardware designed to dissipate energy during an earthquake or similar disturbance. The end product is a building that is potentially more resilient to natural disasters than conventional construction. The three-story building in the project is tested in multiple phases, each phase utilizing a different LFRS in terms of design and materials. The experimental data benefit structural engineers, product manufacturers, and building code developers in academic and professional communities. The data can be reused to quantify and compare the structural performance of the LFRS types tested.
