Understanding the genetic response of aquatic microorganisms to suboptimal growth temperatures has become paramount in a scenario of global warming. Using a reverse evolution approach, we applied cold stress (28°C) to the thermoacidophile red alga G. sulphuraria for more than 100 generations in order to identify components which are critical in conferring thermal adaptation.
