VPRS 7815 Employee Record Book : Northern Engine Houses

This series details the employment history of some employees who were stationed at what was known as the "Northern Engine Houses". A memo inside the front cover indicates that the record book was kept at the Fitzroy Engine House, however many entries trace a person's employment around several depots; Fitzroy, North Melbourne, Carlton, Richmond and Brunswick.The record was originally created by the Melbourne Tramway and Omnibus Company in 1901 to record employees working in the Northern System at that time. Hence some entries give details of the history of employees both before and beyond the date range of the series. It was subsequently kept up-to-date, both by the addition of new employees and by the addition of further details about employees already listed. Those responsible for maintaining the record book appear to have continued to have done so after the company ceased to operate in 1916 and its functions, property and many of its staff were transferred to the Tramways Board.The volume was not used to record any new employees after January 1920, however the movements of employees already listed was noted for several years after; up to at least 1942. A subsequent record book may have been kept for people commencing employment after January 1920 (by which time the Melbourne and Metropolitan Tramways Board has assumed responsibility for most tramways operations in Melbourne), however no other such record books were identified at the time of transfer to the Public Record Office. Similarly no comparable record books for other Engine Houses appear to be extant.In addition to tracing the employment history of each person named, the record book gives information about any disciplinary action taken against an employee, and in some cases records the death of a former employee several years after his retirement. For some entries, death notices appearing in daily newspapers or Tramway magazines have been affixed.The volume contains an alphabetical index by employees surname at the front.
